Eatolls – A Future Food System for the Maldives

Malu Lücking, Lucrezia Alessandroni, Filippo Caprioli, Aimée Lam, Célina Camboni, Anshuman Gupta, Ethan Bennaroch, Qi Liu, Mengdi Zhao

Eatolls aims to improve the infertile soil ecology of the Maldives through the use of custom designed bioreactors. The devices balance alkalinity in the soil while growing nutritious microorganisms. When dried and ground into a powder, these microorganisms can be used in traditional Maldivian cooking.

Alice Taylor

Dr. Alice Taylor is the Lecturer in Biology and Living Systems on the MA Biodesign programme, Central Saint Martins. Working very closely in a small interdisciplinary team led by Nancy Diniz, MA Biodesign course leader, Alice developed new pedagogic approaches for integrating biology into design and for making complex scientific systems accessible to all. Before joining the newly established course Alice spent just under a decade working in the scientific world.

During her PhD at UCL Alice focused on investigating the relationship of diamond with human neural stem cells for neurological implants and neurodegenerative disease investigation. Alice refers to herself as a bioengineer, working in an interdisciplinary field within the nanotechnological and regenerative medicine disciplines. In 2017 Alice was awarded a Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Postdoctoral Fellowship to conduct research at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST), Japan. The fellowship title was ‘3D structured diamond for neural tissue engineering applications’, and she was successful in 3D printing diamond for the first time. Alice’s current interests lie at the intersection of bioengineering, regenerative systems and design.
