Flora Flow

Finalist project

Abhimanyu Gurung, Elahe Rezapour, Emma van Meel, Maryam Javadian Salemi

Flora Flow reimagines the use of menstrual blood, transforming it from waste into a valuable resource for plant fertilization through essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium vital for plant growth. Flora Flow consists of two main components: a specialized pot designed to process used tampons and extract these nutrients, and an accompanying app equipped with sensors that tracks vital statistics, including plant health and menstrual health.

TerraCool

Tina Bota, Ana Green, Nasim Masoumi, Maryam Zolfaghari

Combining innovation and nature, TerraCool aims to tackle the Earth's warming loop by reimagining air conditioning technology. Traditional AC units fuel global warming through their energy consumption. TerraCool is a biodesigned AC system powered by Pseudomonas syringae bacteria aimed to support those in hot climates without access to proper electricity. The transportable, solar-powered system aims to save lives while minimizing environmental impact.

WHAT THE F*SH?

Bo Németh, Sajal Gupta, Ekta Gadekar, Emem Edekhe

Do you know what's happening beneath the water's surface in Amsterdam? This projects imagines an underwater rave to see how drugs affect the lives of fish. Water pollution impacts not only the fish but eventually also the top of the food chain – humans. WHAT THE F*SH is an immersive LED experience that invites the audience to see the underwater perspective and the impact of drug pollution on fish and water ecosystems.

Marije de Haas is a designer, researcher, and teacher. After working in industry for a long time, running a multi-media agency in London (UK), Marije decided to see if she could use design for non-commercial purposes and rolled into teaching and researching somehow, first with a Design Exploration Centre in the wilderness of the North of Sweden, followed by a stint working at Umeå Institute of Design as a designer and teacher, and continued with a PhD at Loughborough university looking at how design can work with ethical dilemmas. Her passion lies in exploring how design can help create a better future, particularly in the face of complex and uncertain challenges. Despite the difficulties inherent in tackling these wicked problems, she remains optimistic and driven to affect positive change.
