If there’s one lesson we’ve learned from running Biodesign Challenge for eight years, it’s that biodesign is here to stay—as a burgeoning career path, hobby, and field of study.

Studying and practicing across disciplines has sparked unexpected journeys and self-discoveries for many BDC community members. From founding startups that are shifting entire industries (just check out Paris Fashion Week 2023) to touching our everyday consumer behavior, biodesigners have the mindset that society needs to reverse environmental damage. Our mission is to make sure future generations of biodesigners have the tools, skills, facilities, networks, funding structures, and communities to keep this planet-saving momentum going.

BDC kickstarted our entrepreneurship journey and taught us how design and technology can reshape our relationship with the environment and with each other.
— Joseph Yap and Shimroth Thomas (BDC '20), founders of ZeroTag

As biodesign as a genre and field continues to evolve, it is critical to have community anchors that both steward and critically assess our inroads and impact. To me, Biodesign Challenge is one such anchor because it serves as an important nexus of life science creativity, education, and research enterprises.
