Aegis

Charlotte McCombe, Jui Deepak Apte, Tanuj Kalra

Aegis is a hospital isolation gown and integrated medical waste disposal system that draws from the unique properties of Cumbungi—an Australian aquatic weed. The gown is made of fibres and starch-based biopolymers from the plant.

E 3 —E to the power of 3—is a bioplastic toy project that aims to entertain children while educating them on the importance of protecting our environment.

 

Locus

Aakash Verma, Anshul Narendra Yerwadekar, Sneha Banerjee

Locus—Location Operating Channel for Unexpected Situation—a geo-tagging service that lines roads and trails and works in correlation with a digital app to help lost travelers back to safety. The device also features location pointing features, a panic button, digital device charging facilities and inbuilt LED light reflectors all encased in a 100% bioplastic body.

 

OceanOrb

OceanOrb is a two-part single-use cosmetics packaging solution made from brown seaweed-derived cellulose and alginate. It is designed to dissolve upon application of the product thus eliminating plastic packaging altogether.

 

T’wine

T’wine is a sustainable millennial-targeted urban winery, app, refillable bottle, and cask container made from a biopolymer derived from wine pomace (the solid remains of grapes after vinification).

Ollie Cotsaftis

Dr. Ollie Cotsaftis is a post-disciplinary and speculative designer whose practice sits at the intersection of the human evolution, the built environment, and the realm of creative biotechnologies. An RMIT School of Design Industry Fellow and Lecturer, his research addresses climate resilience and social innovation in speculative urban futures. Ollie is also the founder and creative director of future ensemble studio and co-founder of Melbourne Speculative Futures—the Melbourne Chapter of The Design Futures Initiative. He experiments with new ideas through his visual art practice and most recently started a column on speculative and critical design for the This is HCD network.
