Mossiva Car Filter

The team imagines a moss and algae based air filter that can be fitted to tailpipes to remove CO2 emissions from gasoline-powered cars.

Adonis

Libby Davis, Joanna Keefe, Mikaila Wilbur, Zeynep Gunalp

Adonis is a cosmetics line inspired by the Blue Morpho butterfly. The projects uses synthetic biology to create butterfly wings as source material for all-natural make up.

 

Alt+P

Bobbi Colburn, Olivia McHugh

Alt+P looks into sustainable alternatives to Super Absorbent Polymers (or SAPs), which are currently used in single-use, disposable menstrual products.

 

Morticulture

Caroline Fortin, Natasha Mwashighadi

Morticulture seeks to normalize the process of death and to give individuals agency in their own environmentally-focused burial. All materials used in the burial are made to biodegrade once the body is laid to rest in the earth.

 

Project Treehouse

Jon Letourneau, Lexi Lowrie

Project Treehouse aims to make biology and green spaces more accessible to young learners by creating a treehouse built from biomaterials including mycelium and spider silk.

Jennifer Varekamp

Jennifer Varekamp is a Costume and Clothing Designer committed to sustainability. She received her ED.M from Harvard University and her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She has also studied at Domus Academy in Milan, Italy and at the London College of Fashion.

 
 

Advisors

Jasmina Aganovic is the President of Mother Dirt, a line of biome-friendly personal care products focused on restoring and maintaining the delicate balance of the skin biome. The technology is based off research from AOBiome, a biotech company focused on transforming human health through products that restore Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria (AOB), which current hygiene practices have stripped from the modern microbiome. She is a cosmetics and consumer goods entrepreneur who received her degree in chemical and biological engineering from MIT. Her career path combined her technical background with roles at consumer brands like LVMH, Fresh, NutraClick and Living Proof.

Sukanya Punthambaker, PhD, is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School. She holds a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Michigan. She received awards including the Department of Biotechnology-Junior Research Fellowship, India, the Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award and the Okkelberg award to an exceptional senior graduate student. She has lectured at UM, and is a fashion enthusiast.
